How to Make Snow

When I think of winter, I think snow! Unfortunately, Southern California rarely gets to experience a snow day without a drive to the mountains. If you can’t make the trip, why not make the snow in your own kitchen! Here is a great science experiment you can do with your kids to have a little fun with snow and learn a little about the 3 states of matter.  Roll up your sleeves and get ready for some winter fun!

You can make your own winter wonderland of snow using just two simple household ingredients.  It is fun for kids of all ages and a great sensory activity.  You can turn your homeschool day into a snowy day without the freezing temperatures.

To make your own snow, you will need 2 cups of baking soda and 1 can of shaving cream. Here are the steps to make the “snow”:

  • Step 1: Pour the baking soda into a large bowl.
  • Step 2: Pour in the shaving cream.  I used a little less than the whole can, there is not an exact measurement.  Just look at the consistency you want.
  • Step 3: Stir it really good so that all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Step 4: Give it to your kids to start playing in the snow! No mittens or jackets required!
