Excel Academy is a tuition-free charter school program where students learn core competencies while also pursuing their passions. Families choose which content and community providers they want to receive educational and extracurricular services from, resulting in a “crowdsourced” database of 800-plus (and counting!) top-notch learning resources.
Families receive $2,700 per year in funding for TK-8th grade and $3,200 per year through high school. At least $400 per year must be put toward core classes, leaving a very comfortable budget for all sorts of activities and workshops. Here are 12 of the most popular Excel content and community providers that families allocate part of their funding to:
1. Celeste Haueter
Celeste is a certified teacher with a visible passion for helping children read and write with confidence. Her creative reading program is a great way to fulfill Excel’s core language requirement.
2. Sylvan Learning
One of the most recognized names in tutoring, Sylvan Learning aims to inspire your child to succeed in their most challenging school subjects.
3. A Plus In Home Tutors
Have a professionally qualified tutor come to your home and help your child in virtually any subject. A Plus In Home Tutors are convenient, consistent, and committed to your child’s academic success.
Mathnasium Learning Centers offer customized math tutoring services for students in grades TK-12 to develop math skills through homework lessons & tutorials.
Another core requirement, another fun and engaging program—particularly for elementary students. Science-2-U has been providing online, homeschool science programs for nearly two decades.
6. Beach Cities Krav Maga
Now that we’ve got the core subjects covered, let’s get into the fun stuff—like martial arts. Beach Cities Krav Maga teaches not only the tactics of self-defense, but also the virtue, discipline, and character that make martial arts such a popular extracurricular activity for kids of all ages.

9. Dunamix Dance Projects
Dunamix is touted as “dancing with integrity” and lives up to that promise with an array of dance classes including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, breakdance, recital, and much more.
10. Firestorm Free Running
At Firestorm Free Running & Acrobatics, students enjoy an array of physical activities—trampoline, martial arts, tumbling, and strength and condition, to name a few—in a safe and inclusive environment. Parents love Firestorm because it allows kids to be active and make new friends. \
11. Urban Workshop
Urban Workshop is a community-centered, membership-based DIY workshop and “maker space.” The space itself is enormous, and the guided classes range from woodworking to metal working and even robotics.
